Let’s talk about social media mistakes. They usually begin here… After much hand wringing, nail biting and an all night “should we” or “shouldn’t we” marathon with the principal partners, involving multiple dirty martinis and Chinese take out; you’ve jumped into the world of social media marketing head first.
You set up your profiles, you uploaded your avatars and cover photos, you even cracked yourself up composing a topical and witty, yet brilliantly concise tag line!
So what’s the deal? Where are the “Likes” the “Retweets” the “comments” and the engagement? Where are the multitudes of adoring fans, prospects and customers beating a virtual path to your door? What gives?
I’ll tell you what gives…You’re making one of these three social media mistakes
Selling Instead of Sharing is 1st on the List of Social Media Mistakes!
If every other tweet, post and status update is chock full of keywords and self promotional sales jargon you’re probably doing more harm than good. You’re not a used car salesman (unless you are), and even if you are I’m sure you abandoned the hard sell routine years ago… Right?
Why not try actually engaging with your followers? Provide value, create interest, participate in the conversation… Encourage your followers to engage with you and your brand by offering them an authentic voice, rather than a commercial and they will love you for it!
If you connect with your followers you won’t have to sing your own praises… They will do it for you!
Not Actually Being Social is 2nd on the List of Social Media Mistakes!

So if your social media strategy is of the “set it and forget it” variety, you may as well do just that… Forget it! You’re doing more harm than good.
Your followers have questions, they leave messages, they post comments, they expect and deserve timely responses to these. If you respond to them days later, or worse yet ignore them completely, a blown lead, a missed sale or a lost client is the least of your worries… You run the risk of permanently damaging your brand by alienating not only that follower, but every follower they have when they share the awful experience with people who actually listen!
So make sure you are regularly checking your social media profiles for messages from fans, followers and prospects, and that you are responding to them promptly and properly.
Not Listening is 3rd on the List of Social Media Mistakes!
Let’s talk sheer numbers, Facebook has about 2.27 billion monthly active users. Instagram has about 1 billion monthly active users. And Twitter has 326 million monthly active users. Any way you slice it… That’s a big freaking pool!
In a pool this large it’s not going to be easy for your future fans and followers to find you. Honestly, an “if you build it they will come” philosophy just isn’t going to work. So you’re going to have to go out there and search for those future followers and fans yourself!
Search for terms and hashtags that are relevant to you and your brand on Twitter. Who is talking about you? Your brand? Your products? Your competitors products? These are your future fans and followers. Follow them, interact with them, engage them… They won’t bite!
Search for terms that are relevant to you and your brand using the Facebook search field and then choose “Public Posts” in the “Search Filters” towards the bottom of the navigation bar on the left. You’ll find new Pages to “Like” new people to interact with and hopefully new fans and followers for yourself and your brand!
